LARP block: The 9th Doctor Adventures
Saturday October 19, 2024 8:00am - 12:50pm PDT
The Ninth Doctor came from the ashes of the Late War Doctor, and refused to acknowledge him as The Doctor. He also was rubbish at card tricks, a tough man with a Northern accent, great at TARDIS flying and jiggery-pokery, and wore a leather jacket like his immediate predecessor, but this one is black, just like his pants. Saved Rose Tyler from temporal burnout from seeing too much in the Eye of Harmony; then regenerated.

William J. Clancey: Zylerium Blindness
Saturday October 19, 2024 9:00am - 9:50am PDT
A Cold War Science Fiction Case Study in Comprehensive Design “Zylerium Blindness” is a short story written during the Cold War about how nuclear explosions created an element, Zylerium, causing global congenital blindness. Authored by Thomas B. Sheridan and John E. Arnold, pioneers in “design thinking” and “human engineering,” this case study for students demonstrates the methods and challenges of “comprehensive design.” Humanity must deal with groupthink and social conformity, which inhibit personal integrity, responsibility, and imagination and thus impair creative problem solving.

One way to build a world-ship might be to encapsulate an appropriate asteroid with all the resources, and reaction mass, to sustain an interstellar journey, or settle the outer reaches of the solar system. What interplanetary and interstellar mechanisms exist that could transport microbial or other lifeforms across our Solar System or between systems, and what are the limits to survivability for organisms hitching a ride from one planetary body to another? With recent identification of interstellar objects observed passing through our system, speculations about cross-fertilization between Earth and Mars, and the prospects for ancient Earth life biosignatures to be found on the Moon, it is fruitful to take a hard look at the destructive and protective factors that such space-going organisms and their traces will face. What can we really expect to find, and how do we rigorously investigate these intriguing possibilities?

Intimate Adventure: No It's Not What You Think It Is
Saturday October 19, 2024 4:00pm - 4:50pm PDT
SF/F author Jacqueline Lichtenberg coined the term "intimate adventure" for a subgenre of SF/F whose the main theme centers around the protagonist's personal growth through the challenge of experiencing other cultures, other ways of being than what they are used to. Often with resultant culture-shock. The archetypal Hero's Journey is one form of intimate adventure. What are some other examples, and how are intimate adventure stories helpful for those of us living in 21st-century reality?

This performance displays the brilliantly colored light created by High Voltage Arcs, Sparks and Corona Glow. This is man-made lightning and thunder, only slightly tamed, and is brought close to people so they can see the beauty in these arcs. Demonstrations are 15-20 minutes and showcase the arcs generated by 3 different Tesla Coils and 10 other types of HV apparatus with arc lengths up to 3 feet long. Intense Electromagnetic fields are created, so in an abundance of caution, people with implanted medical electronics should not attend. The Good Dr. Professor Anderson, a physicist and engineer, is a Maker of Tesla Coils with arcs up to 7 feet long. He is fascinated by the beauty of the colored light from the Arcs, and feels the Intensity and deadly Attraction of being (almost) nose to nose with 500,000 volts of electricity.

Creating a Good Villain for Your Media
Saturday October 19, 2024 6:00pm - 6:50pm PDT
How do you go about designing a villain for a multimedia production? How much of their attributes. motivations, goals, and backstory do you need to start and how much can you save for later? Do you need to find a look or a voice or can you leave it for someone else in the process? How is it similar to or different from writing a villain for a book or creating one for an RPG?

Tesla Coil Demonstration 2
Saturday October 19, 2024 6:00pm - 6:50pm PDT

The Channeled Scablands of Eastern Washington Earth; and Mars
Saturday October 19, 2024 7:00pm - 7:50pm PDT
Ancient floods on Mars left their marks deeply etched into the planet’s surface. Canyons bigger than the Grand Canyon, dry riverbeds, deltas, and huge sandbars suggest to us that Mars had a lot of water and that it flowed with a vengeance. We see something amazingly similar in southeastern Washington, in the Channeled Scablands. Dr. Torley takes you on a tour to do some interesting planetary geology on Earth and its sister planet, Mars.

Consider not "the" future of humanity but "the futures" of humanity. Save for a common heritage distant in time, they might be alien species. What might that be like?

How much more difficult might it be when we also factor in the variables of future alien civilizations with nonhuman intelligent beings?
